Every platform now accepts short videos of a minute and well beyond. That does not mean your clip should be that long. The right length is the shortest one that still delivers a complete idea.
Start with the idea, not the limit
Platform limits change often and are generous today. Viewer patience has not changed. A clip should hold one idea: a tip, an answer, a story with an ending. When the idea is done, the clip is done.
A working range: 20 to 60 seconds
For clips cut from talk (podcasts, interviews, lessons), these ranges are a good default.
- Under 20 seconds: a single line, a reaction, a quotable sentence. Great for reach, light on substance.
- 20 to 40 seconds: one tip or one answer. The most reliable length for advice.
- 40 to 60 seconds: a short story or an argument with a reason and an example.
- 60 to 90 seconds and more: only when the story needs it and the first seconds earn the rest.
How to shorten a clip without ruining it
When a clip runs long, the fix is rarely to speed it up. Take out what the viewer will not miss.
- Cut the wind-up. Start on the first sentence that says something.
- Remove long pauses and false starts. A few seconds come back for free.
- Drop the second example. One clear example beats two.
- End on the point. If the speaker repeats it in other words, stop at the first time.
The first three seconds decide the rest
Length matters less than the opening. Start on the most interesting sentence, not on a greeting. If the clip opens with context the viewer does not need yet, trim the start. In Vidoveli you can move a clip’s start one word at a time until it opens on the hook.
Completion beats duration
A 25-second clip that most people finish usually travels further than a 70-second clip people abandon halfway. If you are unsure, post the shorter cut. You can publish the longer version as a follow-up for the people who asked for more.
When a longer clip is the better choice
Some moments need room. A story with a setup, a turn and a payoff cannot be told in twenty seconds. A tutorial with three steps needs all three. An emotional answer loses its weight if you cut the silence before it.
Ask one question: would a stranger watch this to the end? If yes, keep the length. If the middle sags, look for a cut there before you give up on the clip.
Make a series instead of one long clip
If an answer covers three tips, three clips of twenty-five seconds will usually reach more people than one clip of seventy-five. Each one can stand alone, each gets its own first three seconds, and viewers who like one have two more to find. Number them in the title or the caption so the set is easy to follow.
Different platforms, same clip
You rarely need a different length per platform. Export the same clip in 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. LinkedIn and X also handle square or 4:5 well, which leaves room for a headline above the video.
Let the tool propose, then decide
When Vidoveli looks for clips you can leave Clip length on Any length or pick a range, such as under 30 seconds or 60 to 90 seconds. Any length lets each moment take the time it needs. If a suggested clip runs long, tighten it by removing silences or trimming the end.
